Director's Desk

The College was established in the year 1998 with a vision to develop and create a center of excellence for developing world class technical and managerial manpower for value based services to humanity. For these years, emphasis was laid primarily on developing infrastructure, both in terms of building and laboratory equipments as well the human resource. Much attention was given to develop the sense of belongingness to the Institute among the faculty, staff and the student community. I am happy to say that the goal has been achieved to a great extent and a congenial atmosphere for academics prevails within the Institute which has been instrumental in creating very high academic standard, strong discipline together with an informal relationship between students and faculty members.

During the first few years of the college, the College was streamlining the teaching learning process and was primarily examination oriented. Apart from introducing modern methods of teaching using audio-visual aids, the focus of the college has now been shifted towards the finer points of personality development of the students.

More attention are now given to improve the communication skill of the students in English (both written and spoken). Foreign languages like German are also being taught. All round efforts are made to develop the sense of competitiveness, work culture and work ethics among the student community. All these are being done, so that the students could shape themselves as scientists, teachers, practicing engineers or entrepreneurs. Moreover, the student community is being continuously counseled on the responsibilities of an engineer, keeping in mind the Indian scenario.

The college has a faculty student ratio of 1:15, considering only the permanent faculty members. Efforts are being made to make the ratio to 1: 12 upon availability of suitable senior level faculty to provide more time to teachers to be involved in R & D activities.

The college is on the move to open M. Tech programmes in the fields of Power Systems Engineering. Sincere efforts are underway to be the Centers of Excellence in these areas in near future.

Within its short existence, the college has organized three conferences, two national and the other international, in association with Shelter Promotion Council of India (an NGO,DSTE and AICTE). The EE-Department of the college has also run one AICTE-IST sponsored short-term course of two weeks on Recent Advances in Power System Under Deregulated Environment in 2004. The ECE/EIE- Department has organized a six-day workshop on Microwave and Antennas under Continuing Education Cell of the college

The college at present is promoting active research and developmental activities among its faculties. Also, the college encourages its faculties to pursue higher education for improvement of their quality as teachers and researchers. Presently, some faculties from different departments are pursuing their post graduate degrees at Bengal Engineering & Science University,Jadavpur University and West Bengal University of Technology. Quite a good number of faculty members are pursuing their Ph.D work at different Universities and Institutions, such as Bengal Engineering & Science University, Jadavpur University, ISI Kolkata, IIT, Kharagpur and Calcutta University.

The college received its first sponsored research project from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India in the year 2002 in the Department of Chemistry.

Departments have started putting efforts to interact with Industries for projects and consultancy jobs. The college has already entered into a MOU with an Industrial House and the process of technology transfer to Industries has also started.

It is very evident from the facts that a change in philosophy in Technical Education is taking place in the College since its inception in 1998

A SCENARIO

It is distressing to note the rate of deterioration in social ethics and moral values. The quality of education and evaluation system is alarmingly getting diluted. The index of quality, measured by the marks in various examinations, is becoming a misnomer. Sense of Institutional feelings is getting replaced by personal upliftment. Discipline and decorum becoming decorative entities to be preserved by compulsion and not by the feeling of necessities.

If such trends are not checked , the society may revert back to barbaric age. All concerned people must give their valuable time and effort to understand the seriousness of the brewing problem before it becomes a monster. Time is running out. Technological advancement must encompass social and moral values and associated ethics.

The feeling of helplessness and the concept that nature will take its own course of action for its survival may bring the humanity to the point of no return.

My humble appeal is to all is that the problems of humanity is not to be pushed to the last priority.
